A message from
Speaker Cameron Sexton, Tennessee
Southern Legislative Conference Chair, 2020 – 2021
Dear Colleagues and Friends,
I am honored to serve as Chair of the Southern Legislative Conference (SLC) of The Council of State Governments during the 2020 – 2021 Conference year and to host, along with Lieutenant Governor Randy McNally, the SLC's 75th Anniversary Annual Meeting in the dynamic city of Nashville. Tennessee has the distinction of hosting our founding meeting in 1947, as well as our 50th anniversary in 1996.
The many facets of disruption that the pandemic has brought to each and every one of us is a reminder that working collectively is the best approach to finding solutions to the challenges facing us. While our region, alongside the nation, strives to chart a path forward through these unprecedented times, I can assure you that the mission of the SLC to keep our state elected and appointed officials current on issues of critical importance to the South has not lapsed.
The programs and services available to you through the SLC represent excellent resources that can help states maximize their efforts to serve their citizens. While the "new normal" may not yet be known to us, the support provided by the SLC can help members navigate a number of unique policy areas that have emerged and will need to be addressed with more collaborative and innovative approaches.
Thank you for the steadfast support you have given the SLC as we approach 75 years of service and dedication to promote and strengthen intergovernmental cooperation among our 15 member states. I look forward to working with each of you through the Southern Legislative Conference as we overcome these new challenges, confident the long history of success and resilience of our mutual organization and the Southern region will ensure a prosperous future.
See you in Nashville!
Speaker Cameron Sexton
SLC Chair, 2020 – 2021
