Dear Colleagues and Friends, I am honored to serve as Chair of the Southern Legislative Conference of The Council of State Governments during the 2009-2010 Conference year. While our region emerges from these difficult economic times, I can assure you that the work of the Southern Legislative Conference to keep our state elected officials current on issues of critical importance to the South will continue. The economic turmoil of the past year has reminded us that we work beset when we work collectively to find solutions to the challenges we face. Our work at the state level to balance our budgets, while ensuring the welfare of our citizens, demonstrates that our strength is grounded in the democratic process and not in economic events. As a member of the Southern Legislative Conference, playing a part in this process is extremely important. Your involvement with the SLC can range from responding to surveys distributed by our staff relative to a report or in establishing committee priorities; participating in delegation technical field trips to other states; attending committee or task force meetings of the Conference; making appointments to the respective standing committees; and using the SLC staff as extended legislative staff resources. Regardless of how you become involved, your participation with the SLC is critical to the organization’s success. Across the region, state legislatures continue to act as good stewards of public resources. The services available to you through the SLC represent an excellent resource states have at their disposal to maximize their efforts to serve their citizens. I encourage you to take the time to become familiar with the Southern Office, its staff and services and how they can serve you. Thank you for the support you have given to the SLC during its 63 years, and I look forward to working with each of you to make the Southern Legislative Conference stronger during the course of my chairmanship.
