Program Session 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Panel Discussion on Corrections in Southern States As prison inhabitants reach 1 percent of the American population and as corrections costs soar throughout the country, lawmakers are faced with myriad choices regarding the proper funding of programs to most effectively and efficiently address the problems associated with crime and punishment in their states. Should more prisons be built? How do “tough on crime laws” and early release programs both affect corrections costs? How is it possible to prioritize the safety of citizens while exploring alternatives to prison for some convicts? Such questions are complicated but are not without informed, valuable answers. This panel provides such insights, in an effort to equip lawmakers with the best information for making decisions regarding corrections in their states.
