In 1998, 68
percent of Southern states had no restrictions or bans regarding smoking.
Twenty-five percent had limited forms of restrictions, such as mandatory
smoking sections. Only seven percent of states had outright bans for one or
more of these public venues. Currently, the percentage of states without
any kind of restrictions or bans has dropped to 44. The percentage of states
with limited restrictions also has dropped to approximately 19, but the
percentage for those with all-out bans has risen to 37.
