How have Southern states done on No Child Left Behind
Act plan approval?
The No Child Left Behind Act requires states to develop
plans for improving student performance so that all students meet proficiency by
the 2013-2014 school year, which must be submitted to the U.S. Department of
Education for approval. These plans can vary considerably from state to state.
By June 10, 2004, all state plans had been approved, although some had been
approved with conditions. In the South, only four states were approved without
conditions by this date. By July 31, 2004, six states had made adjustments to
their plans and received approval without conditions. Seven states in the
region have had their plans approved with condition. The map below illustrates
this.
