Question of the Month -November 2004

How have Southern states done on No Child Left Behind Act plan approval?

The No Child Left Behind Act requires states to develop plans for improving student performance so that all students meet proficiency by the 2013-2014 school year, which must be submitted to the U.S. Department of Education for approval.  These plans can vary considerably from state to state.  By June 10, 2004, all state plans had been approved, although some had been approved with conditions.  In the South, only four states were approved without conditions by this date.  By July 31, 2004, six states had made adjustments to their plans and received approval without conditions.  Seven states in the region have had their plans approved with condition.  The map below illustrates this.
