Which Southern states have increased tuition at state universities and colleges and by how much?

State

Proposal/Allowable Increase

Alabama

Varies, University of Alabama increase will be 16.25 percent; Auburn will increase by 16 percent; University of South Alabama will increase 10 percent

Arkansas

5.9 percent to 8.4 percent for resident tuition in the University of Arkansas System

Florida

8.5 percent increase for in-state students; additional 6.5 percent for out-of-state students

Georgia

8 percent average (GSU up 13 percent)

Kentucky

Varies, University of Kentucky up 14 percent; Northern Kentucky University up 16 percent; Eastern Kentucky will rise 9.5 percent

Louisiana

3 percent (this is the third of three years the Legislature has allowed tuition to be increased by 3 percent)

Maryland

18 percent (some flagship institutions may increase to 21 percent)

Mississippi

The state's College Board voted to hold the line on tuition rates at the 2002-2003 level, but approved room and board increases

Missouri

Varies, the University of Missouri approved a 19.8 percent increase in resident tuition

North Carolina

Proposed 5 percent; the University of North Carolina Board of Governors voted to freeze rates at 2002-2003 levels, but the General Assembly has proposed a 5 percent increase

Oklahoma

Varies, University of Oklahoma up 27.7 percent; Oklahoma State University up 23.9 percent

South Carolina

Varies, University of South Carolina-Columbia increase of 15 percent; USC-Beaufort increase of 37 percent; Winthrop University increase of 19 percent; Francis Marion University increase of 17.5 percent; South Carolina State will forgo an increase in favor of a 9-day furlough

Tennessee

Varies by institution; averages around 9 percent to 14 percent

Texas

Varies, the cap on tuition increases has been removed; University of North Texas up 17 percent, Texas Tech up 22 percent

Virginia

Varies, University of Virginia up 19 percent; Virginia Tech up 8 percent; state average is supposed to be capped at 7.5 percent

West Virginia

Varies between 7.5 percent and 9.5 percent,  West Virginia University up 9.5 percent; West Virginia State College up 7 percent
